Supplemental Vote: Thanks to Harman; Super Thanks to Red District Dems
Thanks to Jane Harman for voting Yes on the Democrats' Iraq Emergency Supplemental bill. It's not an incredibly enthusiastic Thank you because Harman never said anything publicly to indicate her support and was undecided (publicly, at least) until the vote itself, and she's in a safely Democratic district that's very much in favor of putting limits on Bush in Iraq. But she did do the right thing, and should get some props.
But my real appreciation goes to the Democrats in Red districts who voted the right way. They had something to lose personally by voting for it, but they did it anyways. Thanks to all of them for acting in the party's and the nation's best interests.

Jane Harman did the WRONG thing. She should have joined Lynn Woosley, Barbara Lee, Maxine Waters, Dennis Kucinich and others in voting against the Supplemental Appropriation. The war won't stop until the funds are cut off.
Small wonder that Harman is trying to tighten the noose around our civil liberties with hearings for repressing domestic radicals - that's all of us who don't approve of her and her friends in the White House.

Jim,
Harman had months ago said she'd support the supplemental for what Bush asked for, this one last time. Getting her to go along with these restrictions in the funding bill was actually progress.
And it's a good thing it passed -- there's value in speaking as a caucus for stopping the war. The situation in the Congress is that there are too many war-supporting Dems plus some timid ones who are not willing vote for supplying only an orderly withdrawal. As you can see by the close vote, Pelosi got as much as she could have. I am disappointed in Harman's Blue Dog ways too, but her she did the right thing.
There'll be more chances to force the issue - and next time, in part because of their compromise here, the Out of Iraq caucus will be in a better position to succeed in turning the screws.
